Standard DEGEE Room Spray Base (Alcohol-Free)
Target use
-
Room / linen / fabric sprays
-
Drop in 5–15% fragrance oil depending on strength
-
Clear, stable, low-flammability, good longevity
Base Formula (100%)
This is the base only – you’ll add fragrance on top:
| Ingredient | % w/w | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Diethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether (DEGEE) | 40.0% | Main solvent, helps longevity |
| Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) | 25.0% | Co-solvent, smooths evaporation |
| PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil or Polysorbate 20 | 10.0% | Solubiliser for fragrance & clarity |
| Deionised / distilled water | 24.2% | Diluent |
| Preservative (e.g. Phenoxyethanol / blend) | 0.8% | Microbial protection (especially with water) |
Then, when you’re ready to make a scent:
Finished product:
Base 85–95% + Fragrance oil 5–15%
For a good starting point:
-
Everyday room spray: 10% fragrance
-
Strong “luxury” spray: 12–15% (check IFRA / CLP, of course)
How to Make the Base
-
Water phase
-
Add water to the mixing vessel.
-
Add preservative and stir until fully dissolved.
-
-
Solubiliser phase
-
Add PEG-40 HCO or Polysorbate 20 to the water with gentle stirring.
-
Mix until you have a uniform, slightly viscous solution.
-
-
Solvent phase
-
Add DEGEE slowly while stirring.
-
Then add DPG and mix to homogeneity.
-
-
De-aerate / rest
-
Let the base sit for a few hours (or overnight) so any bubbles disperse.
-
-
Fill
-
Store as a concentrate in a drum/jerrycan, and pull off what you need for each fragrance batch.
-
Making a Finished Room Spray with This Base
Example for 1 kg of finished room spray at 10% fragrance:
-
Base: 900 g
-
Fragrance oil: 100 g
Steps:
-
Weigh room spray base into a clean container.
-
Slowly add fragrance oil with gentle stirring.
-
Mix for 10–15 minutes until completely uniform.
-
Let stand 24 hours and check:
-
Clarity (no haze or separation)
-
No strong layering on standing
-
-
Fill into fine-mist trigger or pump sprays.
Some fragrances are trickier (highly polar or very heavy). If a blend goes hazy, you can:
Increase PEG-40 HCO / Polysorbate 20 by 1–2% and reduce water slightly, or
Drop fragrance load by a couple of percent.
Lighter Variant (Less Oily Feel, Faster Dry)
If you want a lighter, less “wet” spray (e.g. more for air and light linen use):
| Ingredient | % w/w |
|---|---|
| DEGEE | 50.0% |
| DPG | 15.0% |
| PEG-40 HCO / Polysorbate 20 | 10.0% |
| Water | 24.2% |
| Preservative | 0.8% |
Then add fragrance at 5–12%.
More DEGEE, less DPG = slightly faster dry and less “cling” on fabric.
